Two words, same meaning

I have checked the text with the sample translation. For some words I have used others, altough they are different, the words I have picked are right as well. The words have the same meaning.

  • For instance : seat belts / safety belts or defroster/demister.

Tense

I have used the present tense a lot, I would have been nicer to use the continuous form.

  • E.g.: Start / starting the car,  drive / driving, replace a bulb / replacing a bulb

As I mentioned it would have been better to use the other form altough I do think it is fine this way too. Next time I will do it a bit different.

Spellingmistakes

  • Damage should be replaced with damaged, and therefore there is not necessary to consult your doctor with therefore it is not necessary …..
  • Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to paracetamol or any (of the) ingredients.

Although I checked my text several times I didn’t notice these mistakes. A bit of a dissapointment, I still need to check my texts better.

Style

I tend to use a slightly  more formal type of speech than the example translation. I believe that both are ok to use.

Words

  • Available is a better word for obtainable

These words are not complete synonyms. I should have used available. Obtainable has a similair meaning however it was not completely suitable for this sentence. A good knowledge of the meaning of words is essential.

Capital Letters

Unfortunately I forgot to use capital letters at the beginning of some letter.

Passionfruit

Spelling mistakes

  • A couple examples of spellingmistakes made: in tact instead of intactof instead of off, street instead of streets.

As I mentioned at all my error analysis I must check my work better. x Next time I want to translate the texts, check it and then later read it again. By checking it twice I hope to prevent making these stupid errors. It is unbelievable how many mistakes i could have prevented by checking my work better. A (hard) lesson!?

Prepositions

  • Lack of use of preposition: On warpath instead of on the warpath.

I hope to not make these kind of mistakes too often, or better, not making them at all anymore. I was struggling with this particulair phrase, as I looked it up I couldn’t find the translation. That’s why a translated it literary.

Idiom

  • Another example of wrong use of idiom is: out of my corners the right way of using ‘ooghoeken’ is out of the corner of my eyes. Always been this way / always been the case, We can not fix it / we are unable to threat this.

I have tried to look up idioms and used some in my translation. However when I checked the translation with a native speaker, she came up with a lot of small errors. Next time I want to look up more idioms and ask other classmates or my friend before publishing my work.

Tenses

  • I have used the wrong tense a couple of times at the Passievrucht. For instance: She was not finishing instead of she hasn’t finished. Or Who push instead of who are pushing. are mixed up / have been mixed up, are filled in / have been filled.

I really need to look over the tenses again. I am consistent in using a certain tense however often the wrong one. This analysis made me aware that I make a lot of tense errors. Seeing this now I know i have some work to do!

American English vs. British English

  • A couple of times I used American words, some examples: Elevator, Blinkers.

I am not completely sure how to prevent these mistakes. When in doubt: DOUBLE CHECK!

Jip and Janneke

Spelling mistakes

  • I made a few spellingmistakes in the text. For instance come instead of home.

This mistake could have prevented easily. Just an example of careless writing. An easy solution is suitable: doucle check the work.

Prepositions

  • In some cases I used the wrong preposition. E.g.: juggle with vases instead of juggle with the vases.

To prevent making these mistakes again I would like to review the grammar rules again.

Idiom

  • In Dutch we use the idiom: de vaas zegt….. In English it is not right to use the word say when you speak about objects. An object can not talk. In this case you would say: Bam was the sound of the vase.

I have tried to look up idioms and used some in my translation. However when I checked the translation with a native speaker, she came up with a lot of small errors. Next time I want to do a more intensive research.

Times

Spelling mistakes

  • At this text I made a couple spellingmistakes: e.g.: planes instead of planes and ofcourse instead of of course, Brussel instead of Brussels. Parliamentelection instead of parliament election, Is no self-mutilating… instead of is not a self-mutilating.

In the future I want to use a spellingcheck to prevent these mistakes. These mistakes are absolutely unnecessary.

Wrong word

  • Opposed must be replaced by against, advanced by pushed back

I often use a thesaurus this gives me the opportunity to use lexical variation. However these examples made me aware that i not always choose the right words. Seeing this I now know that I must check out the words I use more intensively.

Tense

  • e.g.: has problems / is having problems

As with the Brexit text I must check my use of tense. I often see that I used the wrong tense. This makes me aware that I really need to review the tenses again. I can not precisely say why i do it wrong so often. But it is an absolute trend.

Preposition

  • I used at the other hand what must have been On the other hand.

Again a small preposition mistake. This error can easily be prevented. I keep repeating: check your work more than once!

Idiom

  • Idiom mistake: What if it isn’t happy anymore.

This sentence was translated to literary. I could not really find a good translation. Normally I try to find a good translation, however i failed at this one. More research next time.

I comparison to the other newsarticle I must say I did a better job at this one text.

Brexit means Brexit

Tenses

  • example: had already finished instead of have already finished

At this texts I made a couple mistakes by using the wrong tense. This text is quite formal and I think i have more problems translating more formal kind of texts. However i did made these mistakes at literary texts as well. I must check my texts better to prevent these mistakes.

Register / style

In my opinion I used the right register and style. Newsarticles need a formal form of speech, I have used this at this specific text.

Preposition

  • I forgot a preposition in combination with a weekday. I used Sunday instead of ON Sunday.

A slovenly mistake. Easy to prevent!

Wordorder

The paragraph about Chequers has a couple of wordorder mistakes (as do others, however the biggest mistake was at this parahraph.) I tend to translate too literary s
ometimes. Being aware of this now, I hope it makes it easier in
the future. I must use more English idiom instead of a literary translation. Another reason that I used the wrong wordorder is that the text has very long sentences. I struggle to translate the complete sentence and still use the right order of words.

I must check my work again and again because I see a trend that is easy to prevent.

Note to self: Bear in mind to check it not once, not twice but triple check!!!!!!!!

Technical texts

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor reflection

One big sigh of relieve. Finally some texts that were, in my opinion, much easier to translate. Both text were absolutely doable.

I did quite a good job I think. i believe that you should not try to invent the wheel. So i used several examples of leaflets and manuals to help me with my translation. For example the leaflet. By using other leaflets it made it easier to use the right register. I did want to avoid making a complete copy so instead of copy past the whole text I also used my own words.

The manual was not difficult to translate as well. I have looked up al the words and checked out other manuals. The only thing I struggled with was to choose the right translation. In some cases the translation device came up with two or more translations for a specific word.

It is harder to translate feelings and opinions than translating facts. This was what made it so doable for me.

Personally I think I did quite well. Mainly because I liked this genre the most. There were no real dillemas. What i would do differently next time? Nothing! (Ok, checking my better 😉 )
